Website speed isn't a technical detail — it hits revenue directly. People click away from a slow site before it loads, and Google ranks it lower as well. Let's look at why, and what you can do.
Why does speed matter?
- The visitor: a significant share of visitors leave if the page doesn't load within a few seconds. Every extra second costs conversions.
- Google: the search engine also watches user experience (Core Web Vitals — loading, interactivity, visual stability) as a ranking factor. A slow site starts at a disadvantage.
What slows most sites down?
- Oversized images: the most common culprit. An unprocessed, multi-megabyte photo drags out loading for no reason.
- Too many heavy scripts: every plugin, embedded widget and tracking tag slows things down. Here, less really is more.
- Slow or overloaded hosting: a cheap, crowded server will hold back even the best code.
- No caching: if the page is rebuilt from scratch for every visitor, it's doing unnecessary work.
- Render-blocking resources: CSS or JS that stops the page from displaying until it has loaded.
How do you measure it?
Google's PageSpeed Insights (pagespeed.web.dev) is a free, reliable tool — enter the URL and you get a score for mobile and desktop plus specific recommendations. Always look at mobile first: that's where most visitors come from.
Quick wins
- Optimise your images: the right size, a modern format (WebP, say), compression. This alone makes a big difference.
- Lazy loading: images further down the page should only load when the visitor scrolls to them.
- Fewer plugins and scripts: delete what you don't use. Every embed is paid for in speed.
- Caching and a CDN: a cache and a content delivery network bring the site closer to the visitor.
- Decent hosting: if you've optimised everything and it's still slow, the server is the bottleneck.
The bottom line
Speed is money: a faster site means more visitors who stay, better Google rankings and more enquiries. Start with the images and the unnecessary scripts — on most sites those two account for the bulk of the improvement. If you'd rather build from the ground up: this is how we build websites.
